Kate,

I am coordinating a version of “Game of Life” that’s coming up in February! We started from scratch as well. The event is set as if it were 10 years in the future. We are still working out some of the details but here’s some information.

Students will be given a participation sheet with space for them to write all of the necessary items. It will also have space for them to subtract their costs as they go along.

Students will check-in at four tables:

1. Career – they will talk briefly with a staff member from the Career Development Center to receive the salary of their future career. Career Development staff members will have laptops so they can access O*Net Online to give the students a realistic estimate. They will divide yearly salary by 12 to give the students a monthly salary to spend throughout the game.

2. GPA/Credit Score – students will choose their GPA from a list of GPA ranges and will be given a credit score to use throughout the game. Below a 2.0 = credit needs improvement, 2.00 – 2.75 = average credit, 2.76 – 3.50 = good credit, and 3.51 – 4.0 = excellent credit.

3. Household Size – students will choose the number of children they plan to have in 10 years and choose whether they will be a single or double income household. Students who choose a double income household will roll dice to determine if they are married or divorced to reflect the national divorce rate.

4. Student Loans – students will meet briefly with representatives from Financial Aid to estimate what their student loan payment will be in 10 years.

Then students will choose if they want to visit two optional booths:

1. Child Care – if students already have children or plan to have children in the future, they will stop at this booth to pay their child care bill based on number and age of children. The Child Development Center will be staffing this booth and providing the rates per child.

2. Pet Care – if students plan to have a pet, they will stop at this booth to visit with representatives from Banfield Pet Hospital to receive their pet care bill based on type of pet.

The rest of the booths are required:

1. Bank – students will go to Commerce Bank booth and set up a fake checking account to establish the importance of having a bank account. Students will have the option to open a savings account which could help them later in the game. They will also pay their student loan bill at this booth.

2. Housing – our Housing & Residence Life office will be staffing this booth. Students will make their housing selection based on family size and credit score.

3. Transportation – students will choose and purchase a vehicle and pay maintenance and fuel costs. Meineke Car Care Center will be staffing this event and staffing by giving out coupons for discounted car services.

4. Utilities – students will pay their gas, electric, water, and trash removal costs based on home/family size. Westar Energy is sponsoring and staffing this booth and we will be using their rates.

5. Communications – students will pay their bill for home phone, cell phone, cable, and internet costs. Different packages will be available.

6. Insurance – students will choose and purchase insurance policies (automobile, home/renter’s, life, and small business). Farmers Insurance is sponsoring and staffing.

7. Supermarket – students will purchase groceries based on family size.

8. Shopping Center – students will purchase goods based on need and preference (clothing, personal hygiene products, etc.)

9. Entertainment – students will purchase entertainment packages based on preference (movie rentals, movie theaters, going out to dinner, Netflix, etc.)

10. Medical Center – students will purchase medical insurance and will spin a wheel to receive a medical ailment (hope their insurance covers it!). Student Health and the Counseling & Testing Center are working together to staff this booth to emphasize the importance of both physical and mental wellness.

11. Chance – students will be given a surprise life events and have to deal with the consequences (most likely a sum of money deducted from their total)

12. SOS – students will receive financial counseling and tips when they overspend

Students will then check out:

Everyone will receive a t-shirt with “Wu’s Game of Life” on the front and sponsor names/logos on the back. Everyone can enter for the chance to win several prizes. There will be one grand prize of at least $100, four smaller prizes (most likely gift cards for $25), and a prize from Meineke Car Care Center. We will have two people working each booth so we’ll have a total of 38 (including two people at the check-out booth). For props, we have a spinning wheel and dice that we will use and clear plastic sign holders for each booth.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Subject: [Natfinwellness] How to run a "Game of Life"?

Hello,
At the conference last summer one event that a few schools had done was a "Game of Life" where there are multiple tables set out, each one representing a different need/want (housing, food, transportation, insurance, etc.). Students have a certain amount of money and go from table to table getting everything they want while staying within their budget. I'd like to do a similar event here in January as part of our MLK week events, the theme being "economic justice."
As I'm starting from scratch, I was hoping those of you who have done this kind of program could tell me how you ran it. A few questions I have are:

What needs/wants were represented?
What forms did you use for the tables? for the students?
How did you come up with pricing?
What were your rules?
How many people does it take to man?
What props will we need?

Any tips, links, printouts would be much appreciated!
Cheers,

Kate Moody
