[mvapich-discuss] version number question

Hi All,

I saw the recent announcement of 1.8a1 and had a question.  The announcement does not explicitly say it, but does the 'a' in the version number imply an alpha release?  I see that 'successive 1.8-RC releases ... will be available in the near future', so that implies to me that this new release is not to the RC phase yet - right?  Is there a methodology to the version number scheme documented somewhere?

Sorry if this is documented somewhere already, but my googling didn't turn anything up and I didn't see anything in the FAQ that addressed this.
