ESSAY COMPETITION: Contemporary Chinese Theatre
CRITICAL REFLECTIONS ON CONTEMPORARY CHINESE THEATRE:
A Competition
The Chinese section of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC-China) announces an international contest for a text related to contemporary Chinese theatre – a theatre or performance review, a feature article on a theatre phenomenon, or an academic essay exploring an aspect of the subject matter. To be eligible, the piece must have been published in the English language during the last three years—that is, between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018.
Reviews should be between 1500 and 2500 words, and features and academic essays between 3500 and 6500 words.
Along with the articles, the authors are expected to provide a PDF or a photo copy of the publication where the articles were published.
A three-member jury will select three winners, who will receive a “Critics Award for an Essay on Contemporary Chinese Theatre." The award ceremony will be held in Beijing at the end of October 2019, during the “Lao She theatre festival," dedicated to the Chinese playwright of modern classics. (Exact dates to be announced.)
The three award winners will also receive a monetary prize of 5000 RMB and their accommodation for five nights in Beijing will be covered by the host.
The English-language contest will be part of a larger one to be held in China, for which a Chinese jury will award pieces published in Chinese. All winners’ texts will be published in a book in Chinese. During the week in Beijing, a conference will be held on the topic “Contemporary Chinese theatre and the critics.”
Entries must be submitted to cab at kalina-stefanova.com by April 1 of this year.
MEMBERS OF THE JURY (alphabetically):
Savas Patsalidis (Greece); Lissa Tyler Renaud (U.S.); Kalina Stefanova (Bulgaria)
