Avant-garde Poetry in the Chinese Literary Scene
A number of related literary-historical terms are often used interchangeably when discussing Chinese poetry written over the course of the past century. These include “experimental” and “modern/modernist” in the early 20thcentury, giving way to unofficial/official and “avant-garde” in the late 20thcentury and beyond. In this panel, we are inviting in-depth discussion specifically of the Avant-garde as a concept and practice in Chinese poetry over this period, both in terms of how it relates to other related concepts within China, and as it functions in the context of a world literary standard or style. We especially welcome contributions from the field of literary studies, linguistics, sociology, and intellectual history.
Possible topics include but are not limited to:
Defining Avant-garde in relation to other literary nomenclature
Avant-garde and Enlightenment
New genres/new forms
Social conditions of the Avant-garde
The production and circulation of the Avant-garde
Avant-garde poetry and the market place
Interaction between Avant-garde poetry, fiction, theatre, visual arts, and film
Women’s writing and the Avant-garde poetry
Avant-garde poetry and realisms
World Avant-garde poetry in China
The Post Avant-garde
Please submit an abstract to no more than 250 words and a brief biography to the panel chair and co-chair by March 31st, 2019.
