Chinese Migratory Realities: An Interdisciplinary Humanities Summer Institute
Call for Applications
The University of Alberta and University of Calgary are co-sponsoring a Humanities Summer Institute that invites participants to central Alberta to study Chinese Migratory Realities. The Institute will run June 19 to July 6 and is supported by generous funding from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation (CCKF), the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI), the Kule Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) and the China Institute at the University of Alberta, and the Calgary Institute for the Humanities at the University of Calgary.
The Institute will accept approximately 20 participants and be organized similar to the structure of an NEH Institute. Priority for acceptance will go to: (1) recent Ph. D.s and academics early in their career, whether in tenure track, contingent, or non-traditional positions; (2) other mid-career academics and/or senior scholars; (3) advanced graduate students. The goal of the Institute is to investigate the migration of Chinese, beginning with medieval and late Imperial China and then moving into the modern and contemporary eras. The Institute will encompass both internal and external migration. Several eminent authorities on the subject will present public lectures and lead discussions on certain days. These tentatively include Julie Chu (University of Chicago); Madeline Hsu (University of Texas); Tina Mai Chen (University of Manitoba); David Wright (University of Calgary); Evan Nicoll-Johnson (University of Alberta); Clara Iwasaki (University of Alberta); and Christopher Lupke (University of Alberta).
Migration of Chinese individuals and families has been a social reality for many centuries, but more recently the numbers have increased dramatically. The current internal move from the interior countryside to the coastal cities constitutes the largest migratory population in world history. This comes on top many waves of migration in Chinese history, the mid-20th century exodus from mainland China, the much earlier movement of Chinese from the southeast coast to Southeast Asia, and the current migration of Southeast Asians of Chinese descent back and forth between Chinese communities in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. These social realignments have had profound implications in the realm of cultural representation, in such fields as literature, cinema (both feature and documentary), memoir, reportage, historical writing, and media. Knowledge of Chinese would be helpful but is not a requirement for participation.
The Institute will cover the following expenses: roundtrip economy airfare from anywhere in the US or Canada to Alberta and housing for the duration of the Institute; local transportation for all excursions; and some meals and refreshments. There will be a nominal deposit of $200 CAD (or equivalent in USD) to guarantee a place in the Institute. Applicants are encouraged to seek partial funding from their home institutions (perhaps $500), although this is not a requirement for acceptance. Attendance for the entire Institute is required. The Institute will be held sequentially on the campuses of the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta and features a three-day excursion to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, about 90 minutes from Calgary, as well as a one-day excursion to the University of Alberta Botanical Garden.
Preference is for applications submitted by Monday, March 19, 2018. Notification for successful applicants to be made in early April. Applications should consist of the following:

two letters of reference
