Modern society is full of sound. The development of acoustic media, the politics of sound, the convergence of audio and visual technologies, and the ubiquitous auditory discipline, all point to the significance of the studies of auditory culture.
Our society today not only creates various forms of sonic phenomena, but also is shaped and constructed by different auditory cultures. The past decade witnessed the growing interests and studies on the technology, media, culture, and social signification of sound. The purpose of this conference is, therefore, to further promote the interactions among scholars in the international scale, to push forward the development of the studies of auditory culture, as well as to advocate new approaches and paradigms to the subject. The major themes of the conference include:
The connotation and implication of auditory culture
The history of sound and audition
Technology, media, and their relationship to audition
Keywords: sound, audition, noise, silence
Auditory culture and modern society
Music criticism and its theories
The culture of sound and the possibility of sound criticism
The aesthetics and politics of sound
The studies of Chinese and foreign theories of auditory culture
Please submit your conference paper or presentation outline (which should be no less than 2000 words) along with a short bio (one paragraph) before July 15, 2017. We will send the official invitation after we have received and evaluated your paper or outline.
