SCMP Staff
An exhibition of the work of one of the greatest living martial arts novelists has found a home with the opening of the Jin Yong Gallery at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Jin Yong is the pen name of Hong Kong’s Dr Louis Cha Leung-yunk. His 15 best-selling novels, written between 1955 and 1972, are devoured by Chinese people of all ages across the world.
Cha, now aged 93, is also as a publisher, editor and political commentator who founded Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper.
His novels have been translated and published in English, yet Cha admits that Western readers may find his novels hard to appreciate, as the adventures are intricately interwoven with Chinese idioms, folklore and culture.
Among 300 items on display is a set of hand-written drafts of The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, which Jin wrote in 1967.
