Top news searches in China, 2017

China’s biggest search engine, Baidu, released a report (in Chinese) on Monday, highlighting the most significant news, events, and people throughout the year in 2017. One of the lists on the report featured the “Top 10 most-searched domestic news” this year.
Belt and Road Initiative: The initiative, first proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2013, is a network of transport and communications infrastructure across Asia and beyond.
Ping-Pong controversy: Liu Guoliang, head coach of the Chinese men’s national table tennis team, was removed from active coaching duties on June 23 by China’s General Administration of Sport. In protest, three of Liu’s former athletes didn’t show up at a major international table tennis competition in Chengdu.
Donald Trump goes to China: U.S. President Donald Trump had his first state visit to China in early November. Beijing rolled out a red carpet at the Forbidden City to welcome him. Listen to the Sinica podcast with Jane Perez on the visit.
The 19th Party Congress: The twice-in-a-decade Party meeting: This year, Xi Jinping thought was written into the Party constitution as his colleagues confirmed his status as “core.”
The Two Sessions: Every year in March, the Chinese government organizes a series of meetings in Beijing to approve new laws and amendments and confirm leadership positions. The event comprises two major gatherings: the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Xiongan New Area: In April, the Chinese government announced the creation of a new city: The Xiongan New Area, a special economic zone about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Beijing in Hebei Province.
Earthquake in Jiuzhaigou: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Jiuzhaigou area in Sichuan Province on August 8, killing at least 19 people and injuring 247.
Reform of home-registration rules (hukou system): In July, the Chinese government issued proposals to remove the distinction between urban and rural residents in an urbanization push.
China’s C919 test flight: China successfully conducted the test flight of its first home-built large passenger jet.
New customs regulations: The regulations took effect on June 1 and stipulated the maximum amount of products one is allowed to bring into the country, in a move to crack down on freelance overseas agents (代购 dàigòu) who buy products on people’s behalf.
