Sights and Sounds of the Cold War–cfp
Sights and Sounds of the Cold War in the Sinophone World
March 25-26, 2017
Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Washington University in St. Louis
The year 1989 has been commonly accepted as the official end of the Cold War, epitomized by the worldwide broadcasting of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9. Since then, political scientists and historians have provided the world a wealth of information about what went on during the Cold War: the intricate intertwine of proxy wars, espionage, diplomatic maneuvering, and propaganda campaigns across the globe. The Cold War may have been declared a closed chapter of history, but its effects and ramifications continue on even today. The focus of this conference, “Sights and Sounds of the Cold War in the Sinophone World,” is to explore some of such effects and ramifications, particularly in the East Asian region and specifically in the three Sinophone areas: Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
This triangle, comprised of a major communist nation (the PRC), a US-backed island-state (the ROC Taiwan), and a British colony (Hong Kong), presents a most intriguing behind-the-scene tug and pull between the Soviet Union and the US-UK alliance. This conference is interested in understanding how the Cold War is experienced in the everyday life and the manifestations of such experiences, how local cultures are thus turned into sites of ideological competition and power struggles, and how various forms of cultural production and consumption created images of enemies and allies and a global imaginary of integration. We, the organizers, have develop the following themes; and we welcome other related creative approaches and inquires:
1. Propaganda State: Agents and Agency
2. Making Sensation of the Cold War: Soundscape and Visuality
3. Theater as War: The Politics of Performing Arts
4. “Chinese Culture” as a Site of Struggle: Cultural Revolution vs. Cultural Restoration
5. Reconstituting Empire: Inter/nationalism and the Global 60s
We invite interested scholars (including Ph.D. students working on their dissertations) to attend the conference, to be held on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, March 25-26, 2017. Please email an abstract of no more than 300 words to both Prof. Letty Chen (llchen at wustl.edu) and Prof. Zhao Ma (zhaoma at wustl.edu) by December 1, 2016. Graduate applicants should also submit a short (1-2 pages) C.V. to receive full consideration. Successful applicants will be notified before December 31, 2017 and will be asked to submit a completed draft of their papers (6,000-8,000 words) by March 1, 2017 for pre-circulation purposes.
Local accommodations including food and lodging will be covered by the conference. We regret that we are unable to cover faculty participants’ travel costs. Graduate students will be reimbursed up to $300 to cover travel costs and other related expenses (depending on budget constraints), and efforts will be made to pair them with a local Washington University graduate student as their host for lodging during the conference.
