China’s Propaganda System conference
Conference Registration: China's Propaganda System: Legacies and Enduring Themes.

Purpose of the conference:
Propaganda has always been integral to the post-1949 Chinese state.  Following the success of the Revolution, the Communist Party of China rapidly took control of all forms of media with the aim of utilising them to further its ambition of creating a new society.  The aim of this conference is to investigate both the rationale and implementation of the various forms of propaganda.  We are keen to explore the historical development of propaganda within the People’s Republic.  To this end we wish to investigate the way in which media and institutions were used to further ideological objectives and convince the populace of the benefits of the new society that the Party were determined to construct.
The conference programme will include discussion panels focusing on the following areas of Chinese propaganda history:
Pre-1949 developments in propaganda.
The fledgling state – 1949-1965.
The Cultural Revolution.
Legacies of propaganda.
In addition, we are pleased to welcome two keynote speakers,
Professor Chris Berry of King’s College London, specialist in Chinese cinema
Yang Pei Ming, curator of the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre.
The conference will take place on Thursday the 31st of June with a pre-conference dinner, with registration and panels taking place the following day, Friday the 1st of July. Post graduate students will receive a booking a discount, however places are limited.
