Aesthetics of Crossing Media Boundaries–cfp
CFP: The Aesthetics of Crossing Media Boundaries in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Culture
Call for Papers: Modern Language Association Annual Conference
January 5-8, 2017
Philadelphia, PA
In conjunction with the MLA Presidential Theme for 2017 “Boundary Conditions,” we seek proposals for a session on the various manners in which the producers of modern and contemporary Chinese culture – writers, filmmakers, artists, musicians – appropriate from various media, mixing them together to create artifacts that cross the boundaries of such media to create works that defy easy and conventional categorization generic terms. We plan to assemble a session of papers that intermingle such things as music with visual experience, the plastic arts with literary expression, stage performance with the written word, digital production and print means, and other such innovative expressions of creativity. The focus may be on anything broadly understood to be culturally Chinese, including works from the PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or the Chinese diaspora.
This is a guaranteed session sponsored by the newly founded LLC Modern and Contemporary Chinese and as such enjoys preapproved status. Additionally, we will apply for its inclusion as a Presidential Theme Session that will provide publicity within the MLA before and during the conference.
Please send a title and abstract proposal of approximately 300 words, along with name, contact information, and affiliation and biographical information to Christopher Lupke at your earliest convenience.
