Why translations of premodern poetry are having their moment (4)
Spring Looks (Errors in my packet)
a variation on 春望 by Du Fu 杜甫 (712-770)
The state smashed, nature abides,
thick green in Spring City.
Sensing the era, the flowers scatter toxic tears.
Hating to part, birds shock the heart.
Beacon fires for nine months,
a letter from home would be worth a billion dollars.
Scratched my grey hair so much,
pretty soon I won’t need a comb.
