National Day box office sets new records
By Global Times
The seven-day National Day holiday (October 1 - 7) helped cinemas in the Chinese mainland rake in a total of 1.86 billion yuan ($292 million) over the holiday, according to China Box Office - a 70 percent increase from last year's 1.08 billion yuan.
Due to the good audience word of mouth, mid-budget comedy Goodbye Mr. Loser became the box office champion of the holiday period with 558 million yuan. Starting off slow with only a 23 million yuan debut on September 30, the film pulled in 109 million yuan at the box office on Wednesday, the last day of the holiday period.
Following close behind were comedy Lost in Hong Kong (547 million yuan) and action adventure film Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (463 million yuan).
Premiering on the second to last day of the holiday period, Pixar animation Inside Out came in last among the top 5 with 49 million yuan, while fourth place went to action/crime film Saving Mr. Wu (112 million yuan).
The National Day holiday period started to become a golden period for the mainland film market back in 2008 when fantasy romance film Painted Skin brought in more than 100 million yuan in seven days. Over that same holiday period, mainland box office returns saw more than 300 million yuan in 2011, nearly 400 million yuan in 2012 and over 600 million yuan in 2013.
Another golden period for theaters is the seven-day Spring Festival holiday. This year, the total box office for this period reached 2 billion yuan. By comparison this is approximately the entire annual box office earned in the mainland in 2005.
The summer holiday period was also a major factor this year, with films: Monster Hunt, Monkey King: Hero is Back and Jian Bing Man earning more than 900 million yuan each.
