Film references in Lu Xun essay (1)
I want to thank those of you who responded to my query. My thanks in particular to Xiao Jiwei and Johanna Zhang. Although we haven't been able to definitely identify the two films in question, we have some good leads, some of which I think are worth sharing with everyone.
1) http://blog.tianya.cn/post-2111189-32474103-1.shtml
This is an inventory of 142 films that Lu Xun watched from 1924 to 1936, according to his diary entries. For Lu Xun fans like myself, this list is really a treasure. Unfortunately, neither of the two films in question appears in the list.
2) http://www.douban.com/note/297627548/
This Douban link is about an MA thesis on "beast films" (兽片) in Shanghai in the 1930s. The author, Long Yuanzhi 龙缘之, has a related article in Dangdai dianying 当代电影 (Sept 1, 2014), which I downloaded and am making available here. At the end of the article is a list of "beast films" screened in Shanghai from 1932-35. 兽林怪人 is listed there (#31). Although no English title is given, Universal Studios (环球影业) is indicated as the production company. Johanna Zhang suggests that this film might be East of Borneo (Universal, 1931). (I've put East of Borneo on the blog post online, so you take a look at it there.) We know from the list of films Lu Xun watched that he saw East of Borneo, though he referred to it in his diaries as 禽兽世界.

The other film (斐洲探险) might be Trader Horn (1931). For a clip see here:
