I think it necessary to inform the MCLC community that Brill's "competitive rate" is, in fact, 400RMB/1,000 Chinese characters. 400RMB per thousand works out to about six U.S. cents per character, which is a starvation wage. Recommended rates for professional translation are exactly double that. Grad students who wish to do some translation work may still be interested; professional translators should probably think twice.
