Might as well add the removal of most of the immensely popular Japanese anime from domestic streaming sites back in March for supposedly violating norms in the depiction of violence, sexuality and "horror" (kongbu). The relation between "horror" and current concerns with acts of "terror" (kongbu) is a coincidentally convenient addition to protectionist strategies in the cultural sector.
The continued intervention in cultural production by the State is quaintly Red and shows a profound disconnect between the authorities and younger spectators and consumers. As this article implies, the government's hard work is ensuring domestic viewers continue to have a completely negative view of domestic production and keep VPN providers in business.
As for a production like this, a board meeting could have consisted of some cultural official suggesting (and perhaps subsidizing) a production house: "My kid really likes ‘Cars.’ Cars makes a lot of money. Make something like ‘Cars.’ ” (But PRC producers are not the only ones to get caught trying to ride Disney’s tails, see “For a Plucky Upstart, Icy Industry Tundra,” NYT 02/07/2014).
After all, it's just a cartoon, cartoons are for kids, and kids will watch anything in color that talks and moves. Tough luck that the parents have to be in the same theaters with their children.
The link below is to a short Beijing News clip on the problem of animation copies.
