Yiguandao (8,9)
“On 25 September 1950 the CCP North-west Bureau issued a directive to launch a campaign to eliminate ‘the activities of the Unity Sect (Yiguandao 一贯道),’ one of the most influential sects in north China and perceived as a major threat to the new government.”
See, Chang-tai Hung, “The Anti–Unity Sect Campaign and Mass Mobilization in the Early People’s Republic of China.” The China Quarterly (June, 2010).

List members will probably not be surprised to learn that this film was not the first time drama was used in the fight against Yiguandao.  In the autumn of 1950, for example, cultural workers in Shanxi were directed by the provincial drama association to produce original dramas to attack Yiguandao.  It is difficult (if not impossible) to see how widespread these shows were, but a quick glance through my notes show that provincial and regional (zhuanqu) teams were coordinating with the anti-Yiguandao campaigns.  These shows are described, rather unsurprisingly, as a mixture of local operatic forms.
