Yiguandao film (6)
At least in the English language scholarship on Chinese film, I have never seen this film mentioned. Goossaert and Palmer, in their The Religious Question in Modern China, discuss the campaign against Yiguandao in the early years of the PRC. Yiguandao was the main focus of a larger campaign against secret and redemptive societies. One of the reasons the campaign was so virulent is that these societies were seen as “instruments of counterrevolutionaries” (p. 148), so the campaign was much more than just an attack on feudal superstitions. Goossaert and Palmer mention that “all forms of propaganda were deployed against it [Yiguandao], from editorials and speeches by Mao published in the People’s Daily and the rest of the press, to posters, comics, exhibits, denunciations, and even theatrical performance” (p. 149). They do not mention film in general or this film in particular.
