Film references on Lu Xun essay (2)
The film 兽林怪人 is Jungle Mystery (Universal, 1932), starring Tom Tyler and Cecilia Parker.(IMdb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023080/ ).
The evidence is a series of advertisements published in Shenbao in 1933-1934, in which the English title and actor Tom Tyler’s name are clearly spelt. One example (Shenbao 1934.01.09 supplement p7) appears to the left (in the blog posting).
The other film 斐州探险 is harder to locate. It is possibly Hunting Big Game in Africa with Gun and Camera (Universal Picture, 1922) (Imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1314195/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ), exhibited in Shanghai in 1923-1924, named 非洲历险记/非洲探险记. One example appears to the lower left (Shenbao 1924.08.11 Supplement p1), another reference (Shenbao 1923.06.05, p17) mentioned its English name. This film is mentioned the last, and the title is rather generic. Personally, I think  that it could be the case that Lu Xun had the impression of the film, and tried to give examples on those films themed with Africa. Hope it helps.
