Education reform?
Dear Listserv members:
One of my students is writing his Independent Study project with a focus on Chinese educational reform. My mind drew a blank when he told me his research interest in a liberal arts education in China; I remember reading somewhere that around the time of Cai Yuanpei as the president of Peking University there were differing views on the purposes and goals of education, to strengthen the nation or to enrich the life of the individual, or something to that effect. The debate at the time of the May Fourth, if I am not wrong, might have been about how levels of education were the benchmarks of a strong nation. Is there anyone familiar with the rhetoric back then on how the nation could be saved by education? Can you direct me to important resources?
Thanks,
Rujie Wang <RWANG at wooster.edu>
