Streaming site Sohu TV’s new sci-fi show Falling Town has gained huge support and attention from online audiences since its debut on March 16.
Calling itself China’s first online sci-fi show, Falling Town centers on a group of people with superpowers and their fight against superpowered villains. The show starts with an encounter between telepath Liu Xin and Qu Xiaowan, who can control time.
Four episodes in, the show has become a hotly-discussed topic among netizens.
Show producer Bai Yicong explained to the Global Times how it is still very difficult to produce sci-fi shows in China. “Our technology and budgets still fall behind our Western counterparts, especially when it comes to special effects. But we do the best we can with limited resources.”
In filming the show, the producers have looked to several overseas works for reference. “There are only a few such works in China, so we’ve had to turn to the West. Take the scenes where time stops for example. While it’s something that is often seen in overseas blockbusters, it has never been tried in China before and so is very difficult to produce,” said Bai.
Movie critics such as Yun Feiyang are confident about the future of China’s sci-fi shows. “They won’t be a huge hit right from the start. But just like US TV shows in China, they will become very big once they earn a following,” said Yun.
