China Dreams and the Road to Revival (1)
This excellent article inspires many questions. Here are three. (1) Elsewhere, a publicly-funded museum enshrining tendentious distortions would stimulate loud and prominent criticism. Prof. Denton indicates that there has been criticism, and doesn’t need to explain why it isn’t loud and prominent. I wonder whether anyone is interested in creating an online virtual tour of the museum, with corrective commentary? Or an audio tour keyed to individual exhibits in the sequence that one would encounter them walking through the museum? It would be nice if some space could be found for contestation and teaching, so that *this* (http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/756976.shtml) will not mark the limit of the Museum’s domestic impact. (2) The article notes the striking historical revisionism on display and speculates, I think persuasively, about the motivation behind it. This topic invites further discussion. For example, does the sympathetic depiction of the KMT and the Republican era reflect (among other things) an effort to influence the political elite on Taiwan? Does the Museum support its gasp-worthy downplaying of class struggle by emphasizing Mao’s 1974 “Three Worlds Theory” (which remains anathema to orthodox Marxists)? (3) Prof. Denton closes by asking “what will happen if the party fails to fulfill the dreams of China’s people to enter middle-class consumer heaven?”A question that is doubtless on the leaders’ minds. But there is another question that is probably also on their minds, as they ponder the history of the R.O.C. on Taiwan and the Republic of Korea: “What will happen if it *does* fulfill them?”
