Annual Conference
Newcastle University
3 - 5 September, 2014

The School of Modern Languages and the Confucius Institute at Newcastle
University are pleased to announce the Annual Conference of the British
Association for Chinese Studies (BACS), to be held at Newcastle University
from 3 to 5 September, 2014.

The BACS annual conference is open to BACS members and non-members alike,
and we welcome participants from all countries.

Panels and individual papers are invited across the full range of
disciplines within the humanities and social sciences on themes and issues
pertaining to Chinese Studies and the Greater China region.

Abstracts for panels and individual papers should be submitted by 30th
April 2014 to

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

Professor David Goodman
- ‘Middle Class China: Dreams and Aspirations’
David S G Goodman is Professor of Chinese Politics at the University of
Sydney, and Professor in the School of Sociology and Behavioural Sciences
at Nanjing University... His publications include (with Bryna Goodman)
Twentieth Century Colonialism and China (Routledge, 2012); (with Beatriz
Carrillo) Peasants and Workers in the Transformation of Urban China
(Edward Elgar, 2012); (with Minglu Chen) Middle Class China (Edward Elgar,
2012); and Class in Contemporary China (Polity Press, forthcoming in 2014).

CALL FOR PAPERS:

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS:

Panel proposals should include: names, affiliations and contact details
(email addresses) of all proposed presenters and proposed panel chair
and/or discussant, where applicable; titles of individual papers; and an
abstract for each paper (max  250 words).

Proposals for individual papers should include: name, affiliation and
contact details (email address), title of paper and abstract of max 250
words.

Abstracts for panels and individual papers should be submitted by 30th
April 2014 to Joanne Smith Finley at: bacs2014 at ncl.ac.uk

Panels and papers will be selected by the organising committee, and
notification of acceptance will be made by 30 May 2014. Abstracts from

The British Association for Chinese Studies has an online peer-reviewed
journal (JBACS) and presenters are invited to submit their papers for
consideration by the journal editors following the meeting. The journal
