As a further follow-up to the Confucius Institutes issue, and as part of
the explanation why even a (once) renowned institution like the
University of Chicago, and its president and board, would sell out to
such a scheme:

There's an excellent, informative analysis of "Higher Ed’s For-Profit
Future" here:

Higher Ed’s For-Profit Future
6.7.14
by David Francis Mihalyfy

"Few universities have embraced the corporatization of higher education
with arms as wide as the University of Chicago . . . "

--The article is a sad testimony to the broader sell-out of
universities, where "the academic" part might increasingly come as a
pretend-icing on the profit-cake. Needless to say, corporatization is a
worldwide trend eating away at free academic inquiry, and the CIs issue
is just one symptom of this. In Britain, where the corporatization
damage is already taking a terrible toll, leading scholars have
organized a Council for the Defense of British Universities,
http://cdbu.org.uk/ --perhaps the time has come for similar initiatives
in other countries, too, --or perhaps it will even become necessary to
re-create the university, outside of the "university."
