Subject: Spectacles in China panel--cfp (1)
*************************************************************

To clarify, this cfp is for an AAS 2015 panel.

Enhua Zhang

While a growing scholarship has shed light on the spectacular phenomena in
China such as Beijing Olympics in recent years, the spectacle culture has
not yet been paid enough attention. This panel examines the makings and
receptions of spectacles in China. It concerns but is not limited to the
following issues: how is spectacle constructed and how it works in China?
What is the relationship between spectacle and reality? How does spectacle
negotiate between aesthetics, politics, and economics? It is hoped that
the papers on this panel are from different disciplines and address
various aspect of spectacles. There is one paper discussing Zhang Yimou¹s
³Impression² series. Other cases could be: literature, film and TV, art
history, sports, political campaign, and mass protest.
