I ran into this vexing problem when I updated to Mountain Lion or whatever
the pre-Mavericks OS was and that very handy conversion tool disappeared
from the drop down menu.

The Apple store folks were able to point me to the following work
around--and it is a workaround, but it gets the job done:

Open up "Text Edit" in your Mac. Copy and paste the entire Word or other
file into Text Edit. Pull down the Text Edit menu (upper left of screen)
and click on Services. Conversion from Simplified to Traditional will be
listed as an option.

 I've been able to convert fairly large documents (300K hanzi), although
if memory serves, I've had to convert them in chunks.
