We are happy to announce the launch of the David Hawkes Archive, jointly
set up and managed by the University Library System, the Research Centre
for Translation and the Department of Translation, The Chinese University
of Hong Kong. Its main content, Professor David Hawkes’ original
translation manuscript of The Story of the Stone, totalling 2,210 pages,
first acquired by RCT in 1997, is now accessible online for all to enjoy.

Professor David Hawkes (霍克思, 1923–2009) was a renowned British
Sinologist, 
much celebrated for his scholarship and creative ingenuity, and most well
regarded for his masterful translations of Chinese literature. His version
of The Story of the Stone is considered by many critics as one of the
first truly successful English rendering of traditional Chinese fiction,
both scholarly and readable, and retains the poetic and artistic aspects
of the original.

The translation manuscript of The Story of the Stone covers chapter 2 to
chapter 80 of the story, totalling 2,210 pages. It was acquired by RCT in
September 1997 and has been preserved carefully by the Centre ever since.
In 2013, RCT decided to place the manuscript at the University Library
Special Collections for better conservation. David Hawkes Archive is the
first collection available through CUHK Chinese Literature Translation
Archive that will be set up soon by the joint efforts of RCT, the
Department of Translation and the University Library System.　

Translation manuscripts often reveal thoughts and emotions of the
translator. Through the manuscript, it is possible for researchers,
scholars, students and lovers of Chinese literature worldwide to
experience Professor Hawkes’ journey in tackling the challenges of
translation, and try to study when, how and why certain translation
decisions were made. Readers will witness first-hand how the great Chinese
classic gradually came alive in another language.

It is our great hope that by sharing one of the Centre’s greatest
treasures, people will be inspired to follow in Professor Hawkes’s
footsteps, and join in the endeavour to share with the rest of the world
some of the best of Chinese literature.

由香港中文大學大學圖書館系統、翻譯研究中心和翻譯系共同籌建的「霍克思文庫」已
正式啟動，以電子版形式展示霍克思教授經典譯作《紅樓夢》珍貴翻譯手稿，共計

霍克思教授（David Hawkes, 1923–2009）是著名英國漢學家，也是當代中國文學研究巨
匠，更因其鬼斧神工的中國文學英譯作品而被奉為譯界泰
斗。他的《紅樓夢》譯作學術底蘊深厚，可讀性強，廣受學術界讚譽，被視為中國傳統小說
英譯作品的經典代表，是翻譯界難得的瑰寶。

香港中文大學中國文化研究所翻譯研究中心在1997年9月購入霍克思教授《紅樓夢》英譯
第二至八十回親筆手稿。為作更妥善的保存，翻譯研究中心於2013年將手
稿轉移至香港中文大學圖書館，並聯合大學圖書館及翻譯系共同籌建「香港中文大學中國
文學翻譯文庫」，「霍克思文庫」是整個計劃最先推出的部份。

翻譯手稿是翻譯研究的重要材料，充分展現譯者的思緒和情感。「霍克思文庫」開放《紅
樓夢》翻譯手稿，使讀者得以通過閱讀和分析手稿中的修改痕跡，重溫譯者的翻譯
歷程，研究譯者在整個過程中所作翻譯決策的時機、原因及手法，親自見證《紅樓夢》這
部傳世經典如何在另一語言世界逐步再現，更從這翻譯範例學習和汲取譯者豐富的
翻譯經驗。

此外，翻譯研究中心更希望藉著開放《紅樓夢》翻譯手稿，讓學者、譯者以及文學的愛好
者更好地體會霍克思教授對中國經典文學英譯的熱情，從而追隨他的足跡，一起推
動及參與中國文學的翻譯工作，與世界分享更多中華民族文學的優秀作品。
