I was at the publicity stunt at the boat house and spoke to the people
from the Mission. They said repeatedly that they nailed down a contract
with Chen on Sunday, part of which was a promise by him NOT to hand out
cash at the boat house -- or in fact at all. That was their condition of
'participating' - i.e., busing in the bodies and getting a $90k cheque.
They said that Chen agreed to that, and that it was in the contract. They
were visibly flustered by the antics that then took place, with Chen
bringing out a tray of silver clips to which three $100 bills were to be
attached, then ostentatiously handing to people. He only gave them to
three-four people, who then apparently gave them back. When everyone else
found there was no cash up for grabs, they were angry and felt betrayed.
There was weeping and gnashing of teeth (or maybe just shouting and
cursing..). So he said that he would go down to the Mission to actually
hand out more cash. That sent up a cheer among the attendees, but
exercised the Mission people even further. In the end he did not go to the
Mission to hand out cash. Instead, the Mission people gave everyone a
press release explaining that they got $90k instead. That made everyone
angrier still.

Suffice to say it was the strangest two hours I've witnessed.
