Subject: censorship at Chinese Studies meeting (1)
***********************************************************

This summer's affair with Chinese Confucius Institute/"Confucius China
Studies Program" censorship and interference with the European Assn for
Chinese studies biannual conference held in Portugal seems not to have
been mentioned yet on MCLC, but is making some shock-waves.

Pages were torn from EACS conference program and abstracts volumes, and
committed funding withdrawn as punishment, when the top Chinese CI
official decided that she did not like some of the contents, invoked the
clause that everything must "follow Chinese law," and had the pages torn.

See the association's own "Report: The Deletion of Pages from EACS
Conference materials in Braga (July 2014)"

China's official Global Times newspaper, for its part, published a
spirited defense of the ripping out of pages from conference programs ...
it was "not shameful." The piece may have been removed (?) but is quoted
elsewhere on the internet:http://news.sohu.com/20140804/n403097704.shtml,
