LITERARY TRANSLATION BOOT CAMP 2014

In conjunction with Singapore International Translation Symposium (SITS)
2014
http://www.theartshouse.com.sg/Programmes/EventPage.aspx?EventID=3517

The Arts House will organise the first-ever Literary Translation Boot Camp
in Singapore. In collaboration with the British Centre for Literary
Translation (BCLT), the boot camp will bring together writers, translators
and editors for an intensive week of workshops and discussions focusing on
best practices in literary translation, creative writing and editing.

The boot camp will lead up to the Translation Symposium, giving the
participants a complete, holistic experience in the field of translation.

The boot camp will comprise workshops in three separate language tracks,
translating Singapore Chinese, Tamil and Malay texts respectively into
English. Each workshop will have a Singapore writer-in-residence, and will
be led by an experienced translator as the workshop leader.

The three workshop leaders are Andrea Lingenfelter (Chinese);Prof Harry
Aveling (Malay); and Lakshmi Holmström (Tamil). The Singapore writers
include You Jin and Isa Kamari.

During these sessions the participants will work on a consensus
translation of one particular Singapore text, a short story or an excerpt
from a novel, with the author present. Recognising that literary
translation is also a form of creative writing, the Boot Camp will
incorporate sessions on creative writing led by award-winning author Tash
Aw, as well as editing to help the translators hone their writing skills.

The participants will do a final presentation of their works during the
Symposium, as well as participate in a plenary session.

Each workshop is limited to no more than 10 participants.
