The Cheng Shewo Institute <http://csw.shu.edu.tw/> at Shih Hsin University
in Taipei is pleased to offer Shewo Postdoctoral (and Predoctoral)
Fellowships to support research in Chinese journalism studies, media
studies, and cultural studies. We welcome research projects at all
stages—and though the fellowship is primarily for recent PhDs and junior
scholars, we also welcome applications from doctoral candidates with
well-designed projects at the dissertation writing stage.

For the upcoming 2014-15 class of fellows, we are especially encouraging
applicants whose proposed research projects intersect with the Institute’s
planned June 2015 international conference and volume--“1815-2015: 200
Years of Chinese News” (see preliminary schedule of topicshere
<http://goo.gl/lCKfmO>.)

Candidates must hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification and have
ability to conduct research in Chinese. Fellows are expected to be in
residence during the time of their award, and to actively contribute to
the events, workshops, and intellectual life of the Cheng Shewo Institute.
For the 2014-15 academic year, fellows are expected to contribute to the
planning and chairing of 1-2 talks or mini-workshop/roundtable in their
particular area of research; in the spring term, fellows will be expected
to participate in the June 2015 Chinese News symposium, and will be
invited to submit an article for inclusion in the volume.

1-2 Shewo Fellowships will be awarded. Fellows receive a full academic
year (12-month) appointment from August 2014 to July 2015. Stipends will
range from 56,580 NT/month (equivalent to Lecturer salary at Shih Hsin
University) to 69,985 NT/month (Assistant Professor salary), to be
determined based on seniority by the Institute’s Faculty committee.
Housing near campus will be available.

Your application packet must include an updated curriculum vitae and bio,
evidence of successful completion of the PhD (or qualifying exams), a plan
of research and writing for the year of appointment, selected recent
publications or a substantial writing sample, and a brief proposal for the
specific talk series, mini-workshop, or elaboration of a thematic unit for
the 2015 Chinese News symposium.

Two letters of reference should be mailed directly to the Shewo Institute.
For recent PhDs and ABDs, one letter should be from the dissertation
faculty advisor.

Application Deadline: May 9, 2014.

Please send the application and supporting
documents via email, as well as a hard copy of all documents to:
