The School of Asian Studies in the University of Auckland invites
applications for the position of Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant
Professor in North America) in Chinese Culture, starting February 2014 for
a fixed term of two years.   This is an early career appointment to cover
retirement and sabbatical leave.

 
Applicants should have a PhD in hand at the time of appointment.  Priority
will be given to candidates with a specialisation in modern Chinese
history, literature and/or popular culture, although applicants with a
specialisation in other disciplines are also welcome.  The successful
candidate will possess a strong research plan in their area of speciality,
some prior teaching experience, and enthusiasm to contribute to
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Chinese and Asian Studies
programmes.

 
The School of Asian Studies is the largest centre for the study of Asia in
New Zealand and teaches four subject areas: Asian Studies, Chinese,
Japanese and Korean.  Language programmes are offered in the three
languages and undergraduate students are required to combine language
study with courses on the history, cultures and societies of their major.

 
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading research university
and was ranked 42nd in the world for Modern Languages in the 2013 QS
survey.  Mercer’s annual Quality of Living survey ranked Auckland the
world’s third most liveable city in 2012.
