Dear Costas,

That is because Greece was first translated into Cantonese (i.e. first
contact established via Southern trade routes, rather than Northern
routes). In Cantonese, the pronunciation is hei1-laap5, after Hellas.
The same is the case for e.g. Switzerland (Suisse), which is rui4shi4 in
Mandarin, but seoi6-si6 in Cantonese.
