The Executive Director of the Hong Kong America Center
Announcement of Search
 

 
The Hong Kong-America Center (HKAC) invites applications for the position
of Executive Director reporting to the Board. A consortium of universities
in Hong Kong, the mission of the Hong Kong-America Center is to promote
the understanding between Hong Kong and American societies through
educational and cultural exchanges.  In so doing, the Center advances
cross-cultural understanding between Chinese and Americans over the bridge
of Hong Kong.  Its office is located on the campus of Chung Chi College in
the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shatin.

The Executive Director has Responsibilities for:

Conceiving, planning, implementing and evaluating education programs that
the HKAC undertakes to accomplish its mission in association with its
member universities;

Cultivating and sustaining relationships with its member universities in
Hong Kong, including senior administrators and academic staff;

Reporting to the HKAC Board of Governors, organizing its meetings, and
engaging Board members in creating opportunities and finding sources of
support for the HKAC and its programs;

Managing a staff of 4-6 people and overseeing the operations,
programmatic, administrative and financial, of the HKAC office at CUHK;
Raising funds and pursuing grants, contracts and/or gifts related to the
mission of the HKAC from sources in governments, businesses, foundations
and private donors.

Communicating with donors about successful implementation and completion
of projects;  

Assisting the Research Grants Council of the Hong Kong government and the
US Consulate in HK to administer exchange programs between HK and the US;

Overseeing the financial health and integrity of the HKAC;

Communicating with stakeholders of the HKAC in HK and the US, and with the
broader public in HK through media relations in print, broadcast and web
based channels;

Developing HKAC as a source of expertise in US-China education relations
and of guidance and counsel to potential partners for exchange programs;

Initiating and implementing innovative cross-cultural, student-centered,
experiential education, including internships and service learning
programs, in the post-secondary education systems of HK, China and the
United States.    

The Executive Director position involves considerable out-of-office travel
within HK among university campuses as well as offices around the HKSAR.
Some HKAC activities are in Macau and the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong.
An annual trip to the USA and to Beijing and/or Shanghai, as needed, is
required.

Traits and Characteristics:

The Executive Director of the HKAC should be a strategic thinker and
innovator in trans-national and inter-disciplinary education who can work
effectively at the intersections of academia, government, business and
NGOs in HK and mainland China.  He/She must have analytic and intuitive
understanding of the higher education systems and cultures in HK, US and
China, and capacity to engage and convene diverse actors in dialogues
across universities and professional sectors.

The successful candidate should also have proven experience developing and
managing budgets, ability to lead a team through the complexities and
challenges of a broad range of programmatic and operational issues, and
the ability to be an extremely strong people manager. Strong written and
oral
communication skills are essential to insure that the Executive Director
will be effective and persuasive with key constituencies of the HKAC.
Capabilities in both English and Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) are
preferred.  

Qualifications Requirements:

Candidates should have had a career path showing progressively responsible
positions in which he/she has developed broad intellectual interests and
management skills that transcend traditional disciplines or administrative
roles.  He/she should have a sense of entrepreneurship appropriate to the
academic and non-governmental organizations that result in greater and
deeper interchange among students and scholars between HK, the US and
China.          

Education and Experience:

A Ph.D. or comparable degree is preferred, but not required.  We also
prefer experience in teaching, research and/or administration in academic
settings in HK, USA and/or mainland China.  Applications should indicate
abilities to conceptualize, develop and evaluate education programs at
tertiary level.  Successful experience in general management, financial
management and strategic planning is required.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.  Preference to
start in fall, 2013.
