Event on China’s Renewable Energy Investment and News on Choke Point

Dear CEF Members,

To kick off our summer work, we are happy to announce a conversation on
Chinese overseas investment in renewable energy on June 10th, featuring
colleagues from World Resources Institute (WRI) and American Council On
Renewable Energy (ACORE). This meeting is part of our Cooperative
Competitors: Accelerating Bottom-Up Energy Partnerships in the U.S. and
China initiative.

Choke Point Expanding: CEF’s partnership with Circle of Blue on
water-energy-food confrontations that created our ever-expanding Choke
Point: China
<http://www.circleofblue.org/waternews/featured-water-stories/choke-point-c
hina/> reporting and convening work is expanding! The Wilson Center’s Asia
Program has joined CEF and Circle of Blue to create a new Choke Point:
India initiative. Those stories will be launching this week, so stay
tuned!

Save the Date for Choke Point: China meetings in Beijing August 5, 6 & 7:
CEF and the Beijing-based Greenovation Hub <http://www.ghub.org/> have
partnered to organize a diverse group of U.S. and Chinese experts to
create the China Water-Energy Team (China WET). The team of water and
energy experts will participate in roundtable discussions in Beijing the
week August 5, 2013 that aim to:

(1) Foster dialogue among environmental and energy professionals in China
on water-energy challenges in the U.S. and China; and,

(2) Identify research, legal, policy, and NGO priorities for China to
begin addressing water-energy confrontations—particularly coal—and explore
opportunities for further U.S.-China cooperation on these issues.

We will send out and post online details of the roundtable meetings soon,
so stay tuned!

UPCOMING CEF EVENT

Scaling Up: Chinese Renewable Energy Investments in the United States and
Beyond

Speakers:

Yingzhen Zhao, World Resources Institute
Todd Foley, American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE)
Hu Tao, World Resources Institute

Date and Time: Monday, June 10, 2013/ 9:00-11:00 a.m.

Location: 5th Floor Conference Room, Woodrow Wilson Center

A global shift to a low-carbon economy requires countries to rapidly scale
up their investments in renewable energy. China is already the leading
global investor in renewable energy infrastructure and Chinese companies
are increasing their overseas investments in renewable energy. China’s
massive domestic and overseas investments in solar and wind industries can
potentially benefit other countries in need of such investments. Chinese
energy investment in the United States notably has accelerated over the
past five years, with Chinese companies investing heavily in traditional
energy as well as in alternative energy. With similarly voracious
appetites for energy, the United States and China could strengthen
economic and energy security by jointly developing renewable technology,
as well as exploring other promising clean energy technologies. At this
June 10th China Environment Forum meeting speakers will explore drivers of
China’s renewable investments and the policy, market and financial
opportunities and challenges to greater renewable investment in the United
States.

Ms. Yingzhen Zhao, from the World Resources Institute (WRI), will present
WRI’s recent research on the trends and drivers of China’s overseas
investment in the solar and wind industries and discuss effective
policies, market conditions, and financing enablers to encourage solar and
wind investments. With an eye on China’s potential role, Mr. Todd Foley,
who directs ACORE’s US Partnership for Renewable Energy Finance, will
discuss some of the challenges and opportunities for increasing capital
formation and investment in renewable energy in the United States. Dr. Hu
Tao, WRI senior associate and former senior economist from the Ministry of
Environmental Protection of China, will speak more broadly on China’s
policies to promote renewable and other forms of environmentally friendly
goods and services.

Cheers,

The CEF Team
Jennifer L. Turner, Susan Chan Shifflett, Luan Dong, Robert Batten, and
Ink Zheng
