I look forward to having a look at this graphic novel. But what I find
most intriguing is the push it is getting, blessed by a Nobel Laureate no
less.

The "graphic novel" industry in the PRC has been publishing a very large
number of books for a decade or so. Despite certain demonstrations to the
contrary, Japanese manga and anime translations are a very large market,
and artists and writers within China have been publishing for years. There
have been reprints of lianhuanhua from the revolutionary period, Song Yang
宋洋 adapted Wang Shuo's Dongwu Xiongmeng (Wild Beasts) a few years ago, his
Bad Girl strips seemed to have been popular enough to have been turned
into a CD. Mainland artists publish manga sized digests, and slightly
larger sized digests as well. One young artist with the English name
Benjamin (本杰明) publishes in formats similar to American sized comics.

I suppose publicity is very important.
