================================================================

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) conferred an honorary degree of
Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, upon the writer Mo Yan back in 2005. The
University was therefore doubly pleased to celebrate with the rest of the
world when Mo Yan won the Noble Prize in Literature 2012. He was the first
Chinese writer to do so.

Back in 2005, OUHK President Professor John C Y Leong praised Mo Yan as
the pride of contemporary Chinese literature, and the honorary degree was
conferred up him in recognition of his mastery of the art of storytelling
and his courage in detailing life in rural China.

That same year Mo Yan gave a public forum at the OUHK, on the topic of
‘Chinese Literature vs World literature: Writer, Translator and Critics.’

The University is pleased to be able to share with you and members of
European Association of Sinological Librarians the video of this talk by
Mo Yan. You can access the video at OUHK on iTunes U
(http://itunesu.ouhk.edu.hk/). Please notify your members.

The video also includes the commentary which followed the talk, by a panel
of well-known specialists in the field, including Prof. Howard Goldblatt.
The video provides a valuable opportunity to benefit from the recent Nobel
Laureate’s views on his own work and on Chinese literature in general.

Should you or a member of your association wish to receive a copy of the
video on a DVD, please contact us at etp at ouhk.edu.hk.

We hope you enjoy the video.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Chow
