Opening of Duke U.’s Controversial China Campus Is Delayed Again

Duke University has pushed back the opening of its campus in Kunshan,
China, by another semester because of construction delays and
communication problems, according to The Chronicle,
<http://www.dukechronicle.com/article/duke-kunshan-university-delayed-again

already experienced several setbacks,

professors have questioned

to open the campus, raising concerns about academic freedom in China and
the project’s finances.

Two of the project’s leaders at Duke responded to the latest setback in a
letter

been delays or misunderstandings over construction issues, but that the
three sponsors of DKU are working together in common purpose to move this
project forward,” they wrote.

Their letter touted “new processes and personnel” put in place by the
project’s partners to ensure that the completed buildings will be “widely
acclaimed and an excellent home for world-class academic programs.” Duke
is still waiting for the campus to receive final “establishment” approval
from the Chinese Ministry of Education, the newspaper reported.
