The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL) in the College
of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University is seeking a
collaborative and visionary leader, outstanding scholar and experienced
administrator to serve as chair of the department. Candidates for the
position must qualify for the rank of Professor through having established
a national reputation of outstanding scholarship and leadership in one of
the language disciplines offered by the department. It is anticipated that
the successful candidate will also be appointed to the Eirik Borve Chair
in Modern Languages. This newly endowed chair is dedicated to fostering
innovation in foreign language instruction and program development and
direction. It is created as part of a larger gift that will provide
additional support to promote foreign language instruction at Case Western
Reserve University. Therefore, we are particularly interested in
candidates with scholarly interest and expertise in second language
acquisition and/or applied linguistics.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures contributes to the
university’s strategic goal of internationalization by teaching students
to participate fully in cultures other than their own through the
acquisition of language skills and cultural awareness. The department
offers courses of study leading to the BA with a major or minor in French,
German, Japanese Studies, and Spanish. In addition, course work or a minor
is available in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian, and Russian. The
department offers the MA in French, and, with English and Classics, the MA
in World Literature.

As department chair, the successful candidate will work toward fostering a
welcoming, inclusive, and transformative academic environment for faculty
and staff, further the development of programs, and oversee curricula,
facilities, and budgets. In addition to providing scholarly and
administrative leadership for the department, duties as Professor will
include teaching, mentoring, advising and university service.

Completed applications received by January 31, 2014 will receive full
consideration. Please send a letter of application and curriculum vitae,
