Unfortunately, It's only after some news attracts national attention and
outrage that the authorities do anything. I've reported on beggars and
missing children for two decades. No improvement since my first story in
1992. The last time I wrote about this was when I did a story on Black
Kilns, and 1,000 missing rural boys. The families told me the police were
not willing to do even simple investigations. A group of parents formed a
vigilante group to hunt for their children, and they rescued 50 kids.
Couldn't the police do a better job of this? When I visited illegal kilns
in Henan a few years ago with nine parents, all from rural areas, the
police tried to detain us, but ignored the illegal kilns. A lawyer I know
during his free time runs a web site to find missing children, but is
afraid to accept foreign funding for fear of getting into trouble. One man
told me that the police refused to even visit the place where his son
disappeared. "If this was the child of a PSB officer, you can be sure
they'd investigate," he told me.

What can one say about a nation that is proud of hosting the Olympics and
GDP figures, but makes no effort to protect it's own children?
