2014 International Symposium on Cross-Cultural Studies

Dialogue and Intertext: Theory and Practice

As early as the beginning of the twentieth century, de Saussure pointed
out that language is a system of difference. Mikhail Bakhtin and Julia
Kristeva, in turn, remind us that words are necessarily polyphonic, and
text, intertextual. In other words, a word, a text and a communication
event can create verbal reflections and refraction, or interactions and
extensions of meanings, within and beyond themselves. How do we find these
concepts of dialogue and intertextuality embodied, changed, extended and
made an exception of in the twenty-first century of global flows? Amidst
the accelerated global flows of people, commodities, information, virus
and desire, traditional society structure has been disembedded, while our
concept of time, space, distance undergo rapid changes. How do we, then,
communicate and analyze texts to find out their internal and external
differences?

This symposium invites academics and industry experts to discuss, on the
levels of theory and/or practice, the implications of Dialogue and
Intertext from a cross-cultural perspective in the following fields:
