Translators needed – Short Stories by the “Post-1980” Generation of
Chinese Writers

“Post-1980” (80 hou) is a term widely circulated in China, referring to
the demographic cohort born after 1980, i.e. those who came of age during
China’s “reform and opening up” era. To a certain extent, the term bears
similar connotations to the “Gen Y” in the West. In the literary scene,
this generation of writers has emerged in the past decade, along with the
rapid commercialization of China’s mass media and cultural institutions.
Apart from a few such as Han Han and Guo Jingming, however, most of these
young writers remain unknown in the West.

Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (Waiyanshe) in Beijing will
publish a bilingual anthology of short stories by this generation of
writers in 2014. This book, co-edited by Geng Song (HKU) and Qingxiang
Yang (Renmin U, Beijing), will be the very first collection of the
“Post-1980” Chinese writers in English. It will open a window for the
outside world to see works by this generation and the life of urban youth
in contemporary China. The following is a tentative list of stories that
have been included:

Home (Zhang Yueran)
The Seine River Does Not Freeze (Di An)
The Tragedy Theatre (Yan Ge)
The Giant Elephant (Pu Yuehui)
Mr Paolo (Zhou Jianing)
The Roughcast Couple (Ma Xiaotao)
Run, Li Lini! (Su Cici)
Let’s Do Something (Shouzhi)
Ring/Son (Su De)
Life Upside-Down (Wang Weilian)
Philips Shaver (Deng Xiaolü)
A Story of Doomsday (Fei Dao)
Thick Egg Rolls (Shu Qiao)
Invisible Planet (Hao Jingfang)
G For Goddess (Chen Qiufan)

We have found translators for most of the stories above but are still in
need of two or three more translators. All translators will be credited in
the book and will be paid a translation fee by the press. Interested
parties are invited to send a CV to gsong at hku.hk directly.
