Subject: readings on PLA and military in modern culture (1)
****************************************************************

For the "role and representation of the PLA and military life within
contemporary Chinese culture," see:

Lee, Haiyan. "The Charisma of Power and the Military Sublime in Tiananmen
Square." The Journal of Asian Studies 70, no. 2 (May 2011): 397-424.

In addition to his book "Embattled Glory," Neil Diamant has written a few
articles on PLA veterans, memory, and citizenship:

1.) "Conspicuous Silence: Veterans and the Depoliticization of War Memory
in China" (published in Modern Asian Studies in 2011). This issue of
Modern Asian Studies also has other articles that may be of of interest
for your class session.

2.)"Veterans, Organization, and the Politics of Martial Citizenship in
China" (published in The Journal of East Asian Studies in 2007)

3.)"The Limitations of Martial Citizenship in the People's Republic of
China," in Peled, Lewin-Epstein, Mundlak and Cohen's Democratic
Citizenship and War (2010)

Hope this helps.

Best,
Covell
