Thanks to Zhuoyi Wang for providing more details regarding Mao's quote.

But it does not give Mao excuse to make a secret deal with the Japanese
army during the war and "thank" them for their help.During the war with
Japan, 20 million Chinese people died.

It is odd to relate what Mao said about Japan invasion to the quote about
US imperialists. US imperialists did not cause 20 million Chinese deaths
like Japan and certainly did not cause 20 ~ 60 million deaths like those
inflicted by the Chinese communist regime after they came to power.

Mao's remarks as cited by Wang Zhuoyi are in line with the following
remark by Karl Marx (1853) about the Opium War:

"It would seem as though history had first to make this whole people drunk
before it could rouse them out of their hereditary stupidity."
