Subject: King's College position
***************************************************************

The Comparative Literature Programme at King's wishes to appoint an
outstanding scholar in the field of 19th and 20th century Chinese
Literature.

Summary: The successful candidate will have strong research and teaching
ability in 19th and 20th century Chinese literature, and will show clear
promise as an emerging academic leader in their field. The appointee will
design and deliver teaching in this area (including comparative
perspectives and the impact of Chinese literature on the West) for the BA
and MA programmes in Comparative Literature. They will also teach on
established undergraduate and postgraduate modules within Comparative
Literature, including the new 'Literatures across Cultures' pathway in the
Comparative Literature MA, and will participate in the administrative and
pastoral support of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Details: The appointee will have a strong research profile, and will be
expected to engage in and develop research projects and supervise PhD
students. S/he will contribute to the development of a PhD focus in
trans-cultural literary studies, building on existing strengths in
Comparative Literature and the School of Arts and Humanities more widely.
They will also be expected to build academic, pedagogical and research
networks across the School of Arts and Humanities and the wider College
community, with a special focus on the Lau China Institute (recently the
recipient of a £6 million donation from a Hong Kong based alumnus). The
Institute was created in 2008 to provide a cross-school focal point for
China-related activities as part of King's strategy on
internationalisation. It plays a defining role in the establishment and
promotion of the College as a centre of excellence for the study of China
and Chinese culture at the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral levels in
the UK and in China. The Institute is developing strong China-related
teaching and research capabilities within King's through programmes in
arts and culture, history, philosophy, religion, politics, economy,
business and social entrepreneurship, and leadership and society. It is
also paving the way for firmer links with Chinese organizations in
education, the cultural and creative sectors, and business and government.
In general the Institute is promoting a comprehensive understanding of
China and its current role in the world. The post-holder will take an
active part at School level in developing links with mainland China,
Taiwan and Hong Kong.

This new position is the third new appointment in Comparative Literature
in the current academic year. These posts represent the growth and
internationalisation of Comparative Literature at King's, combining its
historical strengths in modern European literatures and their classical
traditions with its more recent expertise in Asian, Middle Eastern and/or
African literatures and cultures. It is also part of an ambitious plan of
expansion in the Arts and Humanities as a whole at King's, further
strengthening its position as one of the leading higher education
institutions globally.
