Call for Papers

Foodways in China: New Scholarly Trajectories
University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, USA

25-26 October 2012

More than three decades have passed since the publication of K. C.
Chang¹s field-defining collection, Food in Chinese Culture: Historical
and Anthropological Perspectives (Yale, 1977). ³Foodways in China: New
Scholarly Trajectories² seeks to take stock of the progress of
subsequent and current research on food in China in the humanities and
the social sciences. Interested parties are invited to submit a paper
proposal on any topic pertaining to the study of food in China.
Proposals must include a title and an abstract of no more then 250 words
and can be submitted electronically to foodwayschina at gmail.com. Review
of proposals will begin on July 15. Participants will be notified of
their selection by August 10.

Conference Format:
Papers will be pre-circulated and the conference will operate as a
workshop for works-in-progress. Each paper will be discussed
individually following a brief presentation by the author and discussion
by another conference participant.

Related Public Events:
Keynote address by Francesca Bray, Professor of Social Anthropology at
the University of Edinburgh.
A special exhibit on artifacts of food in Chinese history at the Jordan
Schnitzer Museum of Art.
