Call for Papers
Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference
Chicago, March 6-10, 2013

East Asian / Chinese Blockbusters

Hollywood has long been the undisputed provider for big-budget commercial
films on a global scale. In the last decade, however, East Asian film
industries have produced many home-grown blockbusters that have challenged
Hollywood¹s dominance in local markets. Notable examples includeHero
(2002), Host (2006), and Warriors of the Rainbow (2012). In many cases,
these local blockbusters led the way for the commercial revival of the
local film markets, and shifted the power balance of global film
industries. This relatively new but significant phenomenon is in need of
urgent scholarly attention. The related topics include but not limited to:

-Enabling industrial environment
-Narrative strategies
-Marketing strategies
-Technical exploration
-Evolution of regional blockbusters
-Comparative study among East Asian blockbusters from different regions
-Comparative study between East Asian and Hollywood blockbusters
-Blockbuster reception

My own paper is about Chen Kaige¹s The Emperor and the Assassin (1998) and
Zhang Yimou¹s Hero (2002). Another panelist Yongzhen Shu's paper is about
Lu Chuan's Nanjing, Nanjing (2009). Depending on the number and quality of
the proposals, the panel could also focus on Chinese/Chinese language
blockbusters alone. Send a 300-word abstract and a short bio to Li Yang at
yangll at lafayette.edu by Aug. 10. Reply will be sent by Aug. 15.
