You might find Eric Hyer and Dodge Billingsley's documentary From the
Masses to the Masses: An Artist in Mao's China of interest. It follows the
career of Jin Zhilin from the 1940s through the political campaigns of the
next forty years and makes specific reference to Mao's Talks and their
impact. Along the way it touches on the impact of Xu Beihong, visiting
Soviet art instructors, government art policies, and the peasant painting
movement. The film also introduces Jin's students Song Ruxin, Feng
Shanyun, and Chen Shanqiao and their work. Much of the film is made up of
interviews with Jin and his students and examples of his paintings.
Documentary footage of historical events is also included. A review of the
film by historian Greg Lewis appeared in the spring 2006 issue (Volume 11,
No. 1) of Education About Asia, pp. 56-58.

There is a major study on Yan'an with a particular focus on discourse and
the symbolic by political scientists Apter and Saich. I can't recall their
main point at this moment, but the empirical material they analyze is very
rich.
