As for the reception of "Soul Mountain", several years ago, I asked a
Taiwanese writer and literary editor what he thought of it (the novel was
first published in Taiwan), and he admitted that he thought it was an
inferior work, so bad that he had been unable to finish it ("看不下去").
Regardless of whether one agrees with this assessment or not, it supports
the argument that one needn't have been brainwashed by the government nor
listen to what some Party apparatchik says to dislike Gao's work. In any
case, more than 10 years after his Nobel award, Gao and his work continue
to provoke vitriol and draw scholarly approbation, as most recently
attested to by the recent (2011) international conference in Erlangen. I
hope Liu Xiaobo's work gets similar attention:

"凡有一人的主張,得了贊和,是促其前進的,得了反對,是促其奮鬬的"
