Response to Bill Goldman's post:

Technically, Gao Xingjian was not a Chinese citizen in 2000. Julia
Lovell's book "The Politics of Cultural Capital: China's Quest for a Nobel
Prize in Literature" (or the article version with the same title) would be
a good read (if not a must read) for anyone who wants to reopen a
discussion on this complicated case.

Gao Xingjian took French citizenship in 1997; the PRC does not recognize
dual citizenship.

Gao's Nobel prize only exacerbates the China's "Nobel complex" (as it was
likely intended to do). Lovell's *The Politics of Cultural Capital: China's
Quest for a Nobel Prize in Literature* (Hawaii, 2006) goes into this in
Some detail.
